Amazon Day 2

11/9/21

Woke up early. First one up. Later I learned that my clock was an hour fast. I was up at 4:30am rather than 5:30. No problem - couple cups of coffee by the river while I waited for others to get up.

Tough day on the water today. Phil and I went up river from camp. Not much luck. I picked up one 3lb peacock and two nice bicuda. Phil…..only piranha.

The main events of the day were both in the evening.

On our way back down river our boat ran out of gas and it was getting dark. Our guide Kirari paddled the boat until a “rescue” boat w/ more gas was sent up from camp once they realized it was dark and we were not back yet. Both Phil and I were in good spirits about the situation.

After dinner I went out “hunting” w/ Wellington and two young native men. We hopped in a boat and paddled down river while spotlighting the shore looking for eyes. Two main objectives were Paca, a large 40ish pound rodent, and a 300-500lb kind of wild boar called a tapir. We spent about 3 or so more hours floating in the darkness, a half-moon setting as dim stars shown above.

No paca or boar tonight, but we did find two cayman that Wellington harvested. The indigenous chopped at the caymans head with a machete before tossing them in the boat at our feet. There were a few times the cayman flopped around in the boat….not 100% finished. They hauled the cayman to camp and will cook it up.

Fun and wild night in the Amazon. Hoping water will drop and give us better fishing conditions. Has been tough so far.
